If you’re planning a Delaware beach trip this year, you’d better get ready to book your stay in advance! The beaches start to get crowded before the warm weather even takes hold and the crowds don’t let up until early September. While there’s nothing quite like the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk or the stunning sands of Bethany Beach, sometimes these crowds get a little overwhelming. If you love the beach, but want to avoid the enormous summer crowds, here are seven little known beaches in Delaware that tend to stay quiet, even in the middle of tourist season.
- Woodland Beach, Smyrna
Flickr / Laura Pontaggia Woodland Beach is gorgeous, and the fishing pier is the big draw here. It’s usually quiet, and you can park pretty much right up against the sand. That’s a lot easier than fighting for a spot in Dewey! This is one of my top spots for sunrise watching in Delaware.

- Fowler Beach, Sussex County
HMCola/TripAdvisor Fowler Beach is quiet, except for the chirping of the birds that make this place home. It’s close to Prime Hook NWR and one of the cleanest beaches in Delaware.

- Broadkill Beach, Sussex County
Flickr / Jason Yung Broadkill Beach is close to the busy beaches, but it stays quiet. If I had the option of living at any beach, I’d probably join this little town, right on the quiet Delaware bay.

- Pickering Beach, Dover
Flickr / Jeffrey Pickering Beach is a common spot to go searching for Horseshoe Crabs! It is very quiet year-round, but might not be the best place to lay out in the sun.

- Bowers Beach, Frederica
Flickr / Mike Mahaffie Bowers Beach is my favorite little beach town. It’s quaint and quiet, and the fishing charters here are the best in the state.

- Kitts Hummock, Dover
Flickr / Mike Mahaffie Kitts Hummock is a great place to spot wildlife along Delaware Bay. Other than Bombay Hook and Prime Hook, this is one of the top birding spots in Delaware.

- Slaughter Beach, Dover
Flickr / TJdatsrt Slaughter Beach is the place to go to find and learn about Horseshoe Crabs. In fact, some people think the beach is named after the huge numbers of crabs that wash up on shore every year. If you see one struggling, get it back in the water!
