We all have our favorite beaches along the North Carolina coast. And since each one is entirely different from the next, we schedule our visits based upon what we’d like to do while on vacation. But the Tar Heel State has some wonderful underrated beaches, too. Beaches that are worthy of a look and a visit. Beaches that make any vacation a dream. Check out seven of them below:
- Cape Lookout
Flickr/Zach Frailey A crown jewel of the Crystal Coast, the Cape Lookout National Seashore is a laid back paradise for those seeking to escape the real world for a slower tempo with few distractions. The seashore boasts 56 miles on the lower Outer Banks.
- Oak Island
Flickr/Nathan Firebaugh Take a stroll on the pier, watch sunrises AND sunsets over the water, and enjoy the nature trails found on the island.
- Corolla Beach
Flickr/Steve Vilnit This family-oriented beach slows down the pace for locals and visitors alike. Plus, the wild horses bring a charming vibe you won’t find anywhere else on the North Carolina coast.
- North Topsail Beach

- Carolina Beach
Flickr/Seth Youngblood Take a stroll on the vintage Carolina Beach Boardwalk and visit Carolina Beach State Park. And of course, the beach here is only a stone’s throw from the gulf stream so water temps remain warm well into the late fall season.
- Holden Beach
Flickr/Justin van Dyke A beach town with a real rural feel, Holden Beach offers visitors a quiet retreat from the worries of daily life.
- Sunset Beach
Flickr/-ted The Southernmost beach in the state is also one of the quietest. The beach here is three miles long, and on it, visitors will find the Kindred Spirit mailbox, which routinely sees anonymous letters to loved ones deposited, even though the U.S. Post Office does not service the beach post.
