The state of Nevada is one of the most haunted places in America, with Virginia City being its alleged “most haunted” city. Year after year, the Silver State attracts many curious ghost hunters and tourists in search of our most eerie, unusual, and haunted places. Honestly, when it comes to haunted places in Nevada, there are so many that it’s tough to settle on just a few, however, here are some of our favorites.
- Silver Queen Hotel - Virginia City

It’s home to a ghostly 1800s-era sex worker named Rosie, who committed suicide in Room 11 by slitting her wrists in the bathtub. She has been seen wandering around the hotel, tapping on doors and frightening guests. Many guests have heard loud footsteps on a wooden floor, which is odd, considering the hotel is completely carpeted. - Mackay Mansion - Virginia City

The apparition of a little girl dressed in white has been spotted several times, and many visitors have reported hearing her playing upstairs. A colonel has also been spotted in the kitchen. The first floor was the saloon and the upper two floors had fancy suites and areas for recreational activities. The apparition of a blonde woman named Lena has been spotted on the spiral staircase. Lena was murdered in a third-floor bedroom. The apparition of Lena’s killer, who committed suicide on the 2nd floor, has also been spotted. Reno Tahoe/Flickr Sandy Bowers and his wife, Eilley Orrum Bowers were the first Comstock millionaires. With their instant wealth, they built Bowers Mansion in 1864. After the death of her husband, Eilley was left broke and lost her dream home to foreclosure. There have been many reports of paranormal activity inside and outside of the mansion. Supposedly, Eilley haunts the 2nd floor. She, her husband and their children are buried on a hillside behind the mansion. Katie loved reading and she was also a freelance writer. Her apparition wears her favorite jacket and baseball hat. She has also been spotted in some of the bars that are located along the street. Keep your eyes peeled, because she’s not the only ghost on main street you might run into.

William, a former owner, and his housekeeper, Rosie, have been spotted hanging out here, too. Rosie resides in Room 4, and William resides in Room 5. Rosie likes turning the lights on and off, in addition to moving guests’ personal belongings around. William plays practical jokes on guests, such as locking them out of their rooms. Apparitions have been spotted inside the building, as well as on the front lawn. Heavy footsteps, rolling gurneys and ladies’ voices have also been heard down the halls. And who could ever forget the notorious Area 51, a United States government base so shrouded in secrecy and strangeness that legend says it’s where man and alien have met before. Nevada is honestly kind of a spooky state; we’ve got more than just that one place to brag about, and we’re a haven for people who are passionate about the paranormal and unusual. Of course, there’s always Area 51, which is definitely the most famous (or should we say infamous) creepy place in the state, but there are others that get overlooked way too often, too, like any one of our ghost towns. It’s hard to believe that any of the derelict buildings that still stand scattered throughout the Nevada desert were ever vibrantly alive, but they were. Aurora is an excellent example of this; it was abandoned completely in the 1970s after being a booming town up until then. We’re not sure why that’s so unsettling, but it is - and that’s part of the charm of ghost towns. Are there any famous Nevada hauntings? Of course!
