Long before the days of Wal-Mart and other big retailers, general stores were the go-to place for basic grocery and household needs. Today, the concept of a general store may seem outdated, but they do still exist. These quaint little stores can be found all over the state – many operational, all nostalgic. Check out the list below for charming general stores in Mississippi.

  1. Wagner’s Store, Church Hill

Jimmy Emerson DVM/Flickr Much of Church Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and that includes this general store which also served as a post office.

  1. The Onward Store, Rolling Fork

Jimmy Emerson DVM/Flickr Please note, the Onward Store has permanently closed. This general store and restaurant may be known today for its delicious hamburgers, but the Onward Store has another claim to fame – it is the site of Theodore Roosevelt’s famous bear hunt.

  1. JC’s General Store, Pocahontas

  1. Causeyville General Store, Meridian

  1. J & H Harper Grocery, Hot Coffee

Jimmy Emerson DVM/Flickr Closed for several years now, this general store was surprisingly known for its sliced souse rather than hot coffee.

  1. The Simmons-Wright Company Store, Kewanee

Jimmy Emerson DVM/Flickr Not much has changed at this general store since its opening in the late 1800’s, which is why visiting patrons are guaranteed to feel as if they’ve been “transported back to a time long forgotten.”

  1. “Small Town Mississippi” General Store, Jackson

  1. Miss Del’s General Store, Clarksdale

The self-described “very modern, yet down home, 21st century general store,” offers everything from local feed and garden products to specialty items such as Wardell’s Specialty Pecans and Miss Del’s Southern Delights, a line of sauces, salsas, and pickles.

  1. E. L. Bruce Co. General Store, Bruce
