Arkabutla Lake is a reservoir on the Coldwater River. It sits in both Tate and DeSoto counties in north Mississippi, just west of Fogg Road. The lake is recognized for its serene setting, wildlife, and a plethora of recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

For an easy, relaxed hike to Arkabutla Lake, we’ve got the perfect trail for you. Head to the North Outlet Channel Recreation Area for the Coldwater River Nature Trail System. There are four diverging trails at the trailhead, and you’ll want the 2.2-mile novice loop.

Albeit the shortest option, this 8-foot wide trail doesn’t compromise on scenery. It consists of a natural surface, beautiful woods, wildlife, and gently rolling hills with a 13m elevation gain. You can bask in the sound of wildlife while navigating felled tree debris.

As a woodland walking trail, it also features a stretching station after the first mile, a sizable area that can accommodate outdoor educational classes, as well as interpretative signs depicting wildlife, terrains, routes, and tree identification markers.

The first loop of the trail allows you to enjoy distant views of Arkabutla Lake, which can be quite the mesmerizing sight amid mixed hardwood forests, open fields planted for wildlife habitat, and swamps. At the end of the second loop, the lake comes into full view.
