In far southwestern Wisconsin, there’s a trail through some dense woods that offers a glimpse of the difficult life of early miners. The Badger Hut Trail is a pleasant place for a woodland walk while offering a fascinating window into the state’s mining history. Nearby there are a few nice attractions that can round out a nice day trip to the area. Here’s what you need to know about the Badger Hut Trail and a taste of what you’ll find on your hike.
The trail is located in the hills above the little hamlet of Potosi, a historic river town. It’s an interesting trail but it’s not well known outside of the area.

Potosi is located by the Mississippi River and you can get a good look at the river at a landing not far from the trail. You’ll see plenty of wildlife and river boat traffic. But don’t spend too much time on the river – you’ll want to have enough time to experience this hike.

To reach the trail, travel up the hill via a steep drive and find a spot to park your car, then head into the woods. There are some signs that will help guide your adventure, but keep your eyes open for ruins along the trail.

Back in the 1820s, thousands of men moved to Wisconsin to mine lead and other minerals. They dug holes into the ground and made them into temporary homes, which led to Wisconsinites being nicknamed badgers. You’ll get a taste of this hard life on the trail.

You should also take time in Potosi to visit its other attraction, the National Brewery Museum. The museum is filled with interesting beer memorabilia, including cans, bottles, old advertisements, photos, and more. It takes you through the nation’s brewing history and showcases another industry that helped build Wisconsin.

While the exact history of the Badger Hut Trail has not been completely documented, the holes are believed to be built by miners working on the St. John Mine. One can only imagine how hard the life of a miner would have been like in those days. If you love discovering historic Wisconsin hikes, a trip to Paradise Springs might also be in order.
