Construction on Martin Dam, which formed Lake Martin, began in 1923 and ended in 1926. During that time, Lake Martin was the world’s largest man-made body of water.

A variety of recreational activities are enjoyed by people of all ages on this East-Central Alabama lake, including jet skiing, swimming, boating, fishing, and more. Lake Martin also hosts many events throughout the year such as firework shows, fishing tournaments, and even a jazz festival.

Several landmarks are located along the banks of Lake Martin. One in particular that attracts swimmers of all ages is Acapulco Rock. While here, locals enjoy climbing the rock and jumping into the water below.

A popular restaurant that’s located on Lake Martin is Kowaliga Restaurant, which opened in 1953 and is in Alexander City. A unique feature about this restaurant is that it can be reached by both boat and car.
