Blacksburg was incorporated in 1876. Blacksburg was named after John G. Black, a Confederate veteran who was instrumental in the town’s development.

Nicknamed the “Iron City,” Blacksburg was famous in the late 1800s as a boom town. Massive quantities of iron ore were discovered here, and miners flocked to the area in hopes of striking it rich. The town was so wealthy that it was one of the first in the state to have electric street lights.

Outside of festival weekend, things are generally pretty quiet in Blacksburg. There’s lots of nature to check out. Fishing is a popular pastime in the region, and Blacksburg boasts plenty of places to cast a line!
