Waterfalls are enchanting, aren’t they? Whether you stumble upon one on a wooded trail or find a roaring cascade along a scenic route, the effect is always awe-inspiring. Today’s destination is a historic site that dates back to the eighteenth century, one that has been powered for over 200 years by falling water. The Burwell-Morgan Mill is the oldest operable merchant mill in the Shenandoah Valley, and it’s absolutely worth a visit. The fact that a relatively modest waterfall can operate a mill is nothing short of impressive.

In the early 1780s, a water-powered mill was built and would eventually become the center of the Millwood community.

And the best part of all? Visitors are invited to purchase the products made on-site, which include ground flour, cornmeal, and grits.

Sandra C. / TripAdvisor All products are made without preservatives, so you can rest assured that quality is top-notch. This also means that the grains won’t last quite as long, so be sure to enjoy them soon after purchase or freeze them to maximize shelf-life.

Throughout the year, the mill hosts a variety of events, including some beautiful art exhibits on Saturdays. Also check out the other offerings available at the Locke Store, which include fresh scones and coffee.
