Maine is a state with plenty of waterfalls, and one of the best is only 25 minutes south of Portland. Take a break from the city’s craft breweries for a picnic, hike, and photo session at Cascade Falls.
Operated by Saco Bay Trails, Cascade Falls has been a popular place for locals to picnic, hike, and fish for over a hundred years. With close proximity to Portland and the town of Saco, it’s easy to add this waterfall to the day’s itinerary. The preserve is small—only 14 acres in size. The hikes are short, and only difficult if you decide to venture closer to the waterfall.
The trailhead at the parking lot is for the Trout Pond Trail, which is only a quarter of a mile long. This loop is paved with gravel, so access is easy for children, the elderly, and even sturdy wheelchairs for a quick walk through a pine and hardwood forest.

However, to get the best view of the waterfall, you’ll have to walk down a steep trail off the Trout Pond Trail to the riverbed, but the view is worth it!

When the water level is low during the summer and fall, it’s even possible to cross to the other side, though the water flow of the falls is also lower at this time.

The trail continues on the opposite side of the river, where you can see the top of the waterfall. You can also spot wildflowers such as Lady Slippers in early summer.

The waterfall might inspire you to spend more time in the water. Within a ten-minute drive of the trailhead are a couple of waterparks, including Funtown Splashtown USA.

The beach is less than ten minutes away as well, with a pier and amusement park at Old Orchard Beach.
