When the world was at war and the mainland of the United States was at risk, the Army set to creating defenses along the vulnerable coastlines. All up and down the eastern seaboard, military forts were established to help protect our country and train for any potential threats and danger. One of these forts was located on Cape Henlopen, at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Fort Miles served as an important place for training, equipment testing, and seaside observation. Luckily, its defenses were never tested in combat! Today, the Fort has been turned into a historical area that you can tour by visiting Cape Henlopen State Park. While you’re in the park, be sure to climb the unique Fire Control Tower to find the best views in Delaware.

Up and down the coast, the U.S. Army built “fire control towers,” or observation towers from which they could watch the seas, transmit intelligence, and assist with long-range communication efforts.

Today, these towers still dot the coastline in Delaware. You’ll find them on nearly every beach on the Atlantic Ocean in our state! If you’d like to climb up to the top of one, visit Tower 7 in the Fort Miles Historical Area.
