Mount Frissell straddles the border between southwest Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut. It is in the Taconic Mountains, a range of the Appalachian Mountains that spans four states. At 2,479 feet above sea level, it is the tallest point in the Constitution State. The southern side of the mountain is in Riga Mountain Forest Preview in Connecticut. The refuge features a variety of trails, one of the most popular of which will take you right to the mountain’s summit.
The trail is a bit narrow and steep in places, and some areas are a little overgrown. There are a few rocky areas to scramble through!

Overall, this 2.3-mile out and back hike is not too difficult. Most of the 800-foot elevation gain is over only about a quarter mile near Round Mountain, so you might get winded in that section.

You will want to make sure you’re wearing appropriate footwear and watch your step. There are some muddy areas, particularly if it’s been raining.

The views from Mount Frissell are a little obscured. However, the trail features several lookout points from both Round Mountain and Mount Frissell.

The trails in this area connect to the Appalachian Trail and a few other smaller trails. If you’re just looking to do the quick Mount Frissell hike, make sure to follow the red spray paint.
