If you’re looking for a place to camp that will show you the best of what Grand Teton National Park has to offer, look no further than the enormous Gros Ventre Campground.

This campground is located within Grand Teton National Park, and it’s the closest park campground to the town of Jackson, itself.

Gros Ventre is off-the-beaten-path a bit, and less popular than Jenny Lake campground, despite it being the largest in the park.

There are a mix of RV and tent sites available, and you have to reserve your spot online, which is a new rule beginning in 2021. Previously, the campground was first come, first serve.

While this is a slightly more primitive campground than some others you may encounter in the park, it’s still a comfortable spot to pitch your tent.

Each site has a picnic table, bear boxes, fire ring, and plenty of space to stretch your legs.

Tripadvisor / joewashere2 You can purchase ice and firewood here, but there is no camp store and there are no showers. You will find flush toilets - an unexpected upgrade from this otherwise primitive experience.

One feature of the campground that you mustn’t overlook is that it’s located in a part of the park that’s heavily populated by moose!

In fact, it’s so common to see moose wandering through your campsite that you’ve got to look out for them more than you have to look out for bears.

From babies and young moose during the calving season…

… to enormous bull moose wading through the river, you’re practically guaranteed to see a moose or two when you stay at Gros Ventre campground.

The moose are unlikely to bother you if you don’t bother them but do your best to keep your distance. It’s required to stay at least 25 yards away from any moose, but it would be safer to put even more distance between yourself and these enormous creatures. Observe from a distance, and do not antagonize them!
