Movie history is so much fun! Who doesn’t love learning that their favorite film was inspired by a place that they themselves love? Well luckily Rhode Island has an awful lot of great movies that were filmed in and based on cities all around the state. One that you may not know of is the exciting dark comedy, the Witches of Eastwick.

The Witches of Eastwick is based on the novel of the same name, written by John Updike.

Starring Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Serandon, and Cher, the movie tells the story of three women who are lured into witchcraft by a man they must eventually seek revenge against.

The film is a fun little revenge fantasy with a feminist spin and totally worth a watch!

What many people don’t know is that the town of Eastwick (which does not exist,) is inspired by the very real and very beautiful town of Wickford, Rhode Island.

Updike was living in the town when he wrote the novel that the film is based on and he pulled a lot of inspiration from this charming little area.

While the film was ultimately shot in Massachusetts, it is still a Rhode Island story through and through.

Historic Wickford has gorgeous views, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment that make it perfect for a day out with friends or family.

And knowing that the town inspired such a fun movie is just another bonus! Keep an eye out for similarities to the set as you’re walking around.
