North Dakota is a hiker’s dream state. With hundreds of miles of unique hiking, biking, and walking trails, it’s no surprise that many of them are about as picturesque as they come! Let’s take a look at a wonderful hike that’ll take your breath away (in the best way). The White Butte Trail in North Dakota features amazing views, stunning prairies, scenic mountains, and so much more. We dare you to hike the entire thing – you’ll end up in love with it just like we have!

The White Butte Trail, otherwise known by its lengthier name of White Butte High Point Trail, is nestled near Bowman.

It isn’t terribly long, coming in at just 3.4 miles in length.

Christy Tidwell/AllTrails It’s an out-and-back trail, which means you’ll hike out to a specific point, and then back again. Along the way, you’ll be treated to some truly spectacular North Dakota views.

From the parking area, you’ll spot beautiful White Buttle in the distance - follow a nearby cattle fence in its general direction and you’ll be there in no time.

David Kissick/AllTrails It’s much quicker than it seems like it would be; there’s so much to see and think about on this trek that time seems to fly by and we seem to get there ten minutes after we started.

Realistically, without stops, one can expect the hike to take about two hours or so one-way, depending on their fitness and skill level - but who wants to do it without stopping to take it all in every so often?

Iam Wood/AllTrails The White Butte High Point Trail is remarkably photogenic and a true North Dakota point of pride. Our state is remarkably beautiful, and all it takes is a short hike like this one through some of our most incredible scenery to really put it all in perspective.

The “reward” at the end, so to speak - you know, other than the experience itself - is the incredible view.

Jayson Conover/AllTrails This trail’s major draw is the fact that it takes you to a high point - the highest natural point in all of North Dakota. You’ll want to bring a good camera, because this place is so amazing that you’ll want to have a memory of it forever. Of course, you could always just keep coming back - it’s not a terribly difficult hike, and we suspect you’ll enjoy it enough to want to return soon.

This trail is best used from March through October, as it gets pretty icy and cold during the winter.

Jeff Hubatka/AllTrails Always hike in good shoes, and bring plenty of water. Even if the temperature outside is nice and cool, you’ll still want to make sure to hydrate. Gotta make sure you can come back, too!

Also, it’s worth noting that dogs are welcome on this trail, though they must remain on a leash.
