There are many ways to explore Minnesota’s North Shore, from a trek along the Superior Hiking Trail to a drive up Highway 61 to a visit to the beach. But perhaps the most popular way to explore the region is by visiting the North Shore’s many state parks. Gooseberry Falls is the most popular, with its many trails that take visitors not only to the famous waterfall, but to scenic spots along Lake Superior. This popular park is well worth visiting, but today we’d like to take you into a lesser-known park. George Crosby Manitou State Park is a hidden gem along the North Shore, and it’s home to a beautiful trail – the Humpback Trail – that will take you to some truly spectacular sights. Read on below to learn more about the park and its trail:

The Humpback Trail is a 1.6-mile trail through George Crosby Manitou State Park, a rugged park on Minnesota’s North Shore. Because of the park’s undeveloped nature, you’re likely to have the trail to yourself for most of the time.

The unpaved Humpback Trail passes through a thick, mixed forest. Depending on the time of year, you’re likely to see and hear many different birds in the trees.

And on the ground, you’re likely to spot plenty of interesting foliage. Mushrooms and wildflowers are commonly spotted here.

If you continue to follow the trail, you’ll soon encounter the rushing waters of the Manitou River as it tumbles towards Lake Superior.

The river falls over jagged rock steps, its churning waters creating a powerful waterfall known as the Cascades. It’s an awe-inspiring sight, and one that many who overlook this part do not get to see.

The Cascades are beautiful even in the winter, when their waters are frozen by ice!
