With approximately two-thirds of the Hawaiian population residing in the consolidated Honolulu City and County, the islands are home to countless charming small towns. While we love all of Hawaii’s towns regardless of size, there’s certainly something special about the tiny town of Kula.
Stretching across the area known as upcountry Maui on the western slopes of Mount Haleakala, Kula is a census-designated place that is primarily home to Hawaii locals who prefer to live away from the island’s tourist centers. The residential area is home to a population of approximately 6,400 and lies between 1,600 and 3,600 feet in elevation.

The word Kula translates from Hawaiian to “open meadows,” and is a perfect description of the serene natural beauty you’ll find in this area. From an organic vodka distillery to charming gardens and everything in between, there’s something for everyone here in Kula.
