Here in Ohio, there are plenty of little-known trails that lead to some surprises. The Airplane Rock Trail in the Hocking State Forest leads to a stunning overlook few Ohio explorers know about. Although it’s a bit off the beaten path, the overlook views make the journey worth it.
Tucked away in the Hocking State Forest, there’s a little-known trail you won’t find inside the state park or a nature preserve.

The trail starts in a field but mostly winds through the forest. It’s about a 2.5 mile out-and-back moderately rated trail.
Bonnie Joy Massey/AllTrails Note: If you can’t find parking at the trailhead, you can also park at the Rock Climbing and Rappelling area, although it will add about an extra mile to your hike.
Because the trail to Airplane Rock is a bridle trail, you’ll likely encounter mud along the way—and a horse or two.

Follow the orange blazes until you reach Airplane Rock, which overlooks Crane Hollow.
Kurt Novak/AllTrails You’ll know you’re close to the overlook when you reach the sign that states “No horses beyond this point.”
Atop this interesting rock formation, you can see for miles and miles.
JM Kuck/AllTrails Please proceed with caution and stay away from the edge.
Because the trail is primarily used for horseback riding and isn’t marked on any park map, few people take the time to find this overlook.

Nearby, you’ll also find Chapel Cave, which is also known as 21 Horses Cave. If you have the time, it’s worth it to seek out this natural wonder as well.
Lara Beuhring/AllTrails Both bridle trails connect in a 4.6-mile loop.
