Hike Along The Ocean Front Boardwalk In Southern California

With its vast and gorgeous coastline, Southern California affords us the privilege of hiking alongside the beach. The coastal trails and boardwalks we have here are abundant and there is one in particular that leads to some of the most scenic views in the state. Ocean Front Boardwalk at San Diego’s South Mission Beach leads past some stunning scenery and if you haven’t yet walked it, you should.

South Mission Beach Park is located at the end of the Mission Beach Peninsula, sitting along the scenic San Diego waterfront. This is arguably one of the most picturesque places in SoCal.

Starting within South Mission Beach is the Ocean Front Boardwalk, a 5.9-mile paved path that is primarily used for walking, running, rollerblading, and more. The trail is also accessible to strollers and wheelchairs, so everyone can have an opportunity to enjoy the scenery by the beach.

Along the trail, you may have the opportunity to do some bird watching. Brown pelicans and belted kingfishers can often be spotted here. Wildlife is also abundant and you may be lucky enough to see sea lions swimming in the water.

Although the pathway itself is made of paved concrete and not an actual boarded boardwalk, you can at least take a detour and walk along the pier to experience the feel of a boardwalk.

The Ocean Front Boardwalk leads to some fantastic scenery along its entire length, from the sandy beach to dunes, a pier, and more, it’s about as scenic as a coastal walk can be.
