There are plenty of ways you can escape the big city of Anchorage, but the Turnagain Arm Trail in Alaska is one of our favorite ways to get out and explore! Just a quick five-minute drive from Anchorage will bring you to the trailhead of a beautiful hike that parallels the Turnagain Arm. It’s the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon!

Anchorage, Alaska’s biggest city, can feel a bit removed from Alaska’s wilderness.

Alexa Flores / AllTrails Filled with so many people, plenty of tall buildings, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s nice to escape into the beauty of Alaska’s landscapes.

And the Turnagain Arm Trail is the perfect place to do that!

Chad Wilts / AllTrails Only a 15 minute drive from downtown Anchorage, this trail is a true gem. It takes you high above the city, offering views of Turnagain Arm, Sleeping Lady, and the mountains across the Arm. You’ll be hard pressed to choose your favorite view.

The entire trail winds up the mountainside above the Seward Highway.

Thor Vue / AllTrails The trail ducks in and out of forests, while offering stunning views from clearings along the way. The entire trail is a 4.1-mile loop, and you can connect additional longer sections together to form a much longer hike if you want to challenge yourself.

Once you ascend the first bit, the trail evens out into an easy, rolling hike.

Desi … / AllTrails The entire elevation gain is only 741 feet along the way. The trail is also well marked and maintained, so you’ll be able to keep the path easily.

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, because there are moose and bear along the trail.

Jennifer Williams / AllTrails Keep loud so as not to startle animals along your way, and keep your phone handy for a great photo of the wildlife you may encounter!

There is plenty of parking along the different access points to this trail.

Jeff Huit / AllTrails Because the trail is made up of so many sections, you’ll find plenty of areas to explore each time you want to go out and hike, with corresponding parking lots filled with more than enough spaces.

The next time you have an hour or more, be sure to head straight to this beautiful hike.

Poli Kalugin / AllTrails It’s the perfect trail to do with the whole family. You’ll keep coming back for more!
