Massachusetts isn’t lacking in great hikes and scenic vistas, but we think this short and quick hike near Adams may be one of the best. The Stony Ledge trail at Mount Greylock State Reservation is easy enough for total beginners but has a payoff worthy of an all-day trek.

The Stony Ledge trail is a fun and easy hike that will take you to gorgeous mountain views with very little effort required.

Located off Sperry Road at Mount Greylock State Reservation, the trail is just 1.9 miles and should take most beginner hikers about one hour to complete. That includes the return trip!

The cool thing about this trail is that you can either drive part of the way or walk the entire trail. If you prefer to drive, follow Sperry Road and park at the trailhead. If you want a longer walk, start hiking from the Sperry Road gate.

After following a gravel path for about 30 minutes, you’ll come to the scenic overlook of Stony Ledge. Though you’ll have only gained about 239 feet in elevation, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world.

This trail offers stunning views of Mount Greylock and other nearby peaks. The ledge is a great place to stop for a picnic or to watch the clouds go by.

Though this hike isn’t strenuous, you should still plan on packing some snacks and water to keep you fueled and hydrated. Wear comfortable boots or sneakers and bring layers if you’re hiking in the fall or winter.
