yelp/janey e. Located in Topanga State Park, Los Leones Canyon is where we’re headed today. You can tell from this beautiful gated entrance that this is going to be one epic experience!
Before you start your hike you’ll need to pick a trail. So many decisions!
yelp/teadoro g. There are lots of trails to choose from once you arrive at Los Leones Canyon. The Parker Mesa Overlook is my personal favorite; it can be completed in approximately three hours round trip. However, all of the trails are equally beautiful, so make sure to try and explore all of them at some point.
And off we go.

Get ready to be dazzled by lush canyon paths that create a magical overhead canopy. On a hot day it’s perfect for blocking out the blazing sun.

For the best hiking experience, get out on the trail early to avoid the crowds. How early? If you arrive close to 7 am that will give you time to enjoy the trail before the rest of the world shows up.

This is where we’re headed…
yelp/brandon d. Can you believe that sky? It looks like it will take forever to get to the top, but just put one foot in front of the other and you’ll be there before you know it.
It’s hard to believe this is Southern California. The setting feels remote and secluded – the best way to hike.

The incline is quite steep. At this point you may be panting, so make sure to drink that water. And if you haven’t done so already, slather on some sunscreen.

You’re almost there, I promise.
yelp/ES Right over this hill marks the finish line. There is a trail that keeps going even further, but we’re going to end our hike at Parker Mesa Overlook…you’ll see why.
And you made it!
yelp/jacqueline p. Welcome to Parker Mesa Overlook. The view from up here goes on for eternity. This is the perfect spot to end the hike. I told you it was worth it!
Go ahead and do a happy dance - you deserve it. This is one tough canyon hike in Southern California, but the payoff is beyond rewarding.

Los Leones Canyon In Southern California June 26, 2021 Melissa M. What are some other canyon hikes in Southern California? With numerous mountains and canyons, Southern California is home to some of the best hiking spots in the country. At Solstice Canyon in Malibu, you can hike to an abandoned mansion while enjoying beautiful scenery along the way. Palm Canyon, located on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, has an otherworldly hike through a field of palm trees as you make your way through the canyon. There’s no other hike quite like this! What are the best hikes in Southern California? If you’re up for some adventure, Southern California has you covered when it comes to hiking to some epic locales. Take, for example, a hike to Potato Chip Rock on Mt. Woodson where you’ll encounter views as well as the famous rock formation that does indeed look like a potato chip. In Chino Canyon located in San Jacinto State Park, you have the opportunity to take a tram to the top where you can take in the views before hiking down. It’s a popular thing to do in the Palm Springs area! In Mojave National Preserve you can take a four-mile trek through the sand dunes which is sure to give a good cardio workout in this otherworldly landscape. It does get incredibly hot, so be prepared with plenty of sunscreen and water if you choose to do this hike. You can read about other out-of-this-world hikes in this article. Where are the best scenic overlooks in Southern California? With plenty of mountains scattered around SoCal, there are also plenty of scenic overlooks. Certain overlooks you have to hike to while others are along a scenic drive. Take for example Mulholland Drive. This famous road is as scenic as it gets in Los Angeles and even has an overlook you can stop at to take in the breathtaking views. Boucher Trail at Palomar Mountain in the Cleveland National Forest may be quite a lengthy trek but once you get to the lookout tower and observation point, you’ll be treated to a sweeping panoramic view. It will make the strenuous hike worthwhile.
