Approximately 5,000 years ago, Native Americans used this area as a seasonal hunting ground. Many historic artifacts have been uncovered on the property, and archaeological investigations continue to this day.

The home was commissioned by Janet Livingston Montgomery, a wealthy widow. The house, which she named Chateau de Montgomery, was completed in 1805.
