When most people think of Kansas, their mind doesn’t automatically go to hikes or forests. We’re often thought of as flat treeless plain. But if you’re looking for a hiking or biking trail to check out, we’ve got a great one for you, and it’s got plenty of woods! The Kansas River Trail is an eight-mile riverfront trail with spectacular views that’s good at any time of year. There’s very little elevation gain, so it makes for a fairly easy hike even if you are on foot.
The trail is well marked throughout, so it’s easy to navigate and you don’t have to worry about getting lost.
Erin Odom/Alltrails It’s located within Riverfront Park, an almost 1000 acre park in Lawrence.
Most of the trail is shaded, so you’ll have respite from the sun on a hot day!
Steven LeMon/Alltrails Nature lovers, rejoice! The trail will let you glimpse birds and deer. The city places nesting material throughout the park to encourage birds to nest there.
It can get a little muddy if there’s been recent rain, so watch your step!

As the name suggests, the Kansas River Trail runs alongside the Kansas River. Much of the views are beautiful and look right over the water.

There’s beautiful scenery at any time of day, but we’re particularly fond of early morning visits!
Shawn Edwards/Alltrails There’s nothing like a walk through nature to get your blood flowing.
Don’t forget your camera!
Jason Risley/Alltrails It’s hard to believe, but the area where the park sits was actually once a landfill. The city revitalized it in the 1980s, making it a haven for wildlife and nature-loving Kansans.
