We’re all pretty proud of small-town Indiana. Most of us grew up in a tiny town ourselves and many of us still live in a small town. Small Hoosier towns offer some of the most interesting activities, have some of the most beautiful scenery, and house some of the nicest people you’ve ever met. If you’re looking for a new tiny town to explore with tons to do, you’ll definitely want to visit Metamora.

Metamora, Indiana/Facebook Metamora is especially fun to visit in the warmer months, but there’s plenty to do there, even when it’s cold and snowy.

Metamora, Indiana/Facebook Metamora, Indiana is a tiny town in Franklin County, on the east side of our state. This charming place is only home to around 188 residents but offers a bustling environment for visitors and tourists.

Metamora, Indiana/Facebook Like many small Indiana towns, Metamora has a lovely covered bridge, although this bridge is a little different than most. It’s actually housed over their infamous canal, dubbed the Metamora Aqueduct Covered Bridge.

Karen Starkey/Flickr On warmer days, you can actually take a boat ride on the canal, pulled by horses. It’s quite charming and offers you the best view of Metamora.

Karen Starkey/Flickr While Metamora isn’t a large place to visit, you’ll find many historic buildings, local shops, and old homes worth exploring.

Valerie Everett/Flickr In fact, you’ll find plenty of local shopping here and many shops and restaurants are open year-round. Granny’s Ice Cream and Cookie Jars and the Smelly Gourmet are just a couple of the businesses that keep their doors open all year.

Jimmy Emerson, DVM/Flickr There’s even a working grist mill available for you to explore. This building was reconstructed in 1900 after the original mill shelter was destroyed by a fire.

J. Stephen Conn/Flickr Starting in May, there’s even a train that departs from Connersville and stops in Metamora for a few hours so that visitors can enjoy all of the local shopping, food, activities, and sights of this small town.

Karen Starkey/Flickr Metamora also has a gem mine, horseback riding, carriage rides, and hiking trails. You’ll never run out of fun in this small town!

Best Small Towns in Indiana August 22, 2021 Tori Jane What are some fun things to do in Indiana?   Indiana’s a great state with lots of fun stuff to be done. Whether you’re the outdoorsy type or more of a big city person, you’ll find plenty of amazingly fun things to do in Indiana. The Hoosier State is home to some of the best camping in the world, not to mention some of the most unique geography of the Midwest. It’s a land-locked state, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a beach day! And, better still, one of those beaches doubles as – get this – sand dunes. That’s right, sand dunes in Indiana. You could tour our amazing art and history museums or go on a foodie adventure sampling the best breaded tenderloin in the state. Your imagination is the limit.   What are some of the best day trips in Indiana to take?   Indiana might be a relatively small state, but it’s full of cool day trips you can do. If you can dream it up you can probably create a day trip around it. Of course, there are always the classics: spend the day at one of our amazing state and/or national parks, and if you want to stay a little longer, there’s plenty of camping available at each. You can make a day out of visiting the covered bridges in Parke County, which is often called the covered bridge capital of the world! Or, if you’re a little on the spooky side, you could take the day and visit some of Indiana’s spookiest haunted locations, or maybe its eeriest abandoned places.   What are the most charming small towns in Indiana?  Indiana, like most places, has many more small towns than it does big cities! Small towns in the Hoosier State are a special kind of unique and ultra-quaint, and we have no doubt that you’ll fall in love with more than one (which makes it kind of hard to decide where to move). Some of our favorites include the little town of Berne, which is also known as Indiana’s Little Sweden. Nashville is an adorable little town and the only one of its kind in Brown County. It’s a haven for artists, so if you’re the artsy type, you’re sure to love it. Angola is awesome…and rumored to be the most haunted little town in Indiana. We also really love Beverly Shores, which was Indiana’s first-ever dark-sky city. For more of our picks of the most charming small towns in Indiana, take a look at this handy list!
