Delaware’s beaches are already a popular summer destination for Maryland and DC-area vacationers, but it’s worth it to take a break from the frenzy of people and head to one of the best foodie towns in the state just 15 miles west of Rehoboth Beach.

Milton, DE, only has a few thousand residents, but it’s solidly on the map for foodies in Delaware, thanks to the presence of the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery.

Opened in 1995 and still headquartered in Milton, Dogfish Head Brewery produces over 260,000 barrels of beer annually. Their brews can be found in 31 states, and they run a number of brewpubs throughout the country, but it all started right here. You can even take tours of the brewery.

The brewery offers “off-centered ales for off-centered people” and is especially known for their India Pale Ales (IPAs), including their 120 Minute IPA. Order a flight to sample several brews.

The food menu is short, tasty, and always changing! Typical stalwarts on offer include pizza, salad, bratwurst sandwiches, and pulled pork.

You know you’ve reached Dogfish Head Brewery when you see the Steampunk Treehouse. You can take a closer peek if you want, but inside is open only for team members during creative meetings. The outdoor seating surrounds the treehouse.

It’s not all about Dogfish Head in Milton. Irish Eyes Pub and Restaurant, an authentic Irish pub, has a large outdoor patio near the banks of the Broadkill River for a relaxing drink.

If the menu at Dogfish Head isn’t inspiring you, eat dinner here. On top of traditional favorites such as Fish and Chips and Shepherd’s Pie (and Seafood Shepherd’s Pie) you’ll find mussels, seafood, and burgers.

But where to get dessert? Kings Homemade Ice Cream has been churning homemade ice cream since 1972 in its humble parlor. Family-owned for three generations, the parlor is housed in the oldest commercial building in Milton, dating back to 1830.
