With its own covered bridge and lots of rural land, this is an absolutely beautiful town to explore.

And it’s also the departure point for one of the most impressive drives in the state.

Head north on Route 3 towards the Canadian border and you’ll be driving on, what’s often referred to as, Moose Alley.

This isn’t just a cute New England name! This portion of Route 3 is fairly remote which means the presence of moose is almost guaranteed.

The 21-mile trip from Pittsburg to Connecticut Lakes State Forest takes visitors through a scenic part of the state that includes lots of forest and lakes.

As you make your way along be sure to look for Lake Francis followed by First Connecticut Lake, Second Connecticut Lake, Third Connecticut Lake and (you guessed it!) Fourth Connecticut Lake.

But you’ll want to be extremely careful about keeping your eyes on the road as moose can often appear just around a bend. If you’ve never seen one in-person you might be shocked at just how huge they are. Be on the lookout for the large yellow signs warning motorists to keep watch.

And when you do keep watch you might get lucky enough to spot on at the side of the road!

Even if you don’t see a moose this is one of the most scenic drives in the state. The entire journey should take about 35 minutes if you don’t stop. Once you’ve come to the state forest, simply turn around and head back on Route 3 to experience it from the other direction.
