We’d guess that most people think of Maine’s coast when they imagine state waters. With it’s inlets and rocky outcroppings, it certainly is unmistakable. But there’s a lot more to Maine than just that. In fact, we have an entire area referred to as the Lakes & Mountains Region! While we love taking some time to visit, if you’re willing to travel a bit further off-the-beaten-path you’ll find one of the most beautiful lakes in the state.

Nahmakanta Lake is located in Maine’s famed North Woods, one of the more remote regions of the state.

The lake is almost completely surrounded by mountains and forests, which helps to make it so beautiful.

But it also means that getting here is no easy feat. People have been known to arrive via sea plane! But despite how remote it is, true adventurers always find a way.

The surrounding area is also great for spotting moose. And the Appalachian Trail isn’t far, so views of the lake aren’t hard to come by if you’re a thru-hiker.

Many of us are definitely not thru-hikers and that means having to find another way to access the lake.

The 3.5-mile long river is essentially free of any business or lodging with the exception of the Nahmakanta Lake Wildnerness Camps.

For a special weekend away plan to stay at one of their cabins to access that includes kayaking, canoeing and lots of fishing!

Nahmakanta Lake is surrounded by the Nahmakanta Public Lands. You can learn more about the area by checking out this beautifully designed brochure. It’s best to plan your visit in advance so you can be sure to know how and where to access the lake. A great jumping-off point is Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps, the only lodge or accommodation on the lake.
