A rare species is officially making a comeback in Ohio. Earlier this year, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources released the Eastern Hellbender back into Ohio waters. It’s an endangered species that might seem unusual to spot at first glance due to its large size for a salamander, but its role is actually quite vital to the Buckeye State’s ecosystems.
Although most salamanders grow to be about 6 inches in length, the Eastern Hellbender averages around a foot to a foot and a half long.

Because they can grow up to two feet in length, spotting one in or near the water can be quite alarming—but don’t worry, this is a harmless, helpful and valuable species.

Over the years, ODNR has been hard at work to re-establish this creature in our state. Late last year, the agency released more than a dozen Hellbenders into a central Ohio stream (not pictured).

You’ve likely spotted these unique salamanders in your local zoo a time or two.

But should you spot one out in the wild, don’t panic! Just leave it be and be thankful for the rehabilitation process.
