Some Mississippi cities, like Natchez and Columbus, have tons of well-preserved antebellum buildings. Other areas of the state aren’t as fortunate. For instance, the Old Brick House is one of only a couple of antebellum houses still standing on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Having weathered numerous hurricanes and several centuries, it’s a Gulf Coast landmark, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the past.
Living up to its name, Biloxi’s Old Brick House is, well, old! In fact, it’s touted as “one of the most historic structures in South Mississippi.”

The exact date of the home’s construction is unknown, but is estimated to be between 1835 and 1840.

Age is only half of what makes Old Brick House special, though.

Rarity is the other half. With countless hurricanes ravaging the Gulf Coast throughout the centuries, buildings from the antebellum period (1783-1861) aren’t very common.

Luckily, the Old Brick House has withstood the test of time… and hurricanes, including Katrina, during which a seven-foot storm surge smashed into the home.

Its ability to endure is due to its unique construction. Not only is it a brick structure, but it’s three brick layers thick!

The Old Brick House has overcome more than hurricanes over the years, though. In the 1950s, after falling into disrepair, the Biloxi Garden Club stepped in and raised money to restore the Old Brick House.

By 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places; and in 2019, the city of Biloxi gave it a new life as an event venue.

Between its historic appeal and idyllic location on the Back Bay, it’s as if this dwelling was meant to be an event venue all along!
