Old Cahawba, also known as Cahawba and Cahaba, is located in Dallas County, Alabama. Best known as “Alabama’s Most Famous Ghost Town,” it’s currently operated as Old Cahawba Archaeological Park.

From the years 1820 to 1826, Cahawba was Alabama’s first state capital. This town also served as the county seat for Dallas County. Shortly after the Civil War, Cahawba was abandoned and eventually became the ghost town it is today.

Situated at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba Rivers, Old Cahawba was once a thriving antebellum river town.

While exploring the ghost town today, which, as previously mentioned, is operated as Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, you’ll encounter several historic buildings that have been preserved. One of these is St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, which is more than 150 years old.

Another building you’ll encounter is the Fambro-Arthur House, which was constructed in the early 1840s. This is also Old Cahawba’s last remaining original home.

You’ll then stumble upon what’s left of the Crocheron Mansion. This magnificent home was constructed in the 1840s but sadly burned down in the early 1900s. Today, all that remains are a few of the home’s brick columns.

During your visit, you’ll even come across Old Cahawba’s three cemeteries, which include gravestones dating back nearly 150 years.

Upon your arrival, don’t forget to pick up a map at the park’s Visitor Center. It’ll show you where everything is. Keep in mind, there’s an entrance fee to Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, which is $2 per adult and $1 per child.
