Here in Minnesota, we have access to more than a few old-school spots. From nearly 18th century houses to the state’s oldest restaurant, Minnesota has plenty of attractions for those who want to explore state history. That includes the spot we’d like to introduce today. Neumann’s Bar has been open since 1887, making it the oldest in the state. Read on below to learn more about this nearly 140-year-old bar and eatery:
Neumann’s Bar is a bar and restaurant in North St. Paul, Minnesota. Right in the Twin Cities metro area, it’s a great place to visit whether you’re coming from out of town or you live right down the road.

Open since 1887, Neumann’s is 134 years old in 2021. That makes it the oldest bar in Minnesota! When you visit, you can still see evidence of its age. The inside looks like an old-fashioned barroom.

The bar started as a place to serve Hamm’s, a beer first brewed in St. Paul and one that is still served at Neumann’s today.

During the Prohibition era, Neumann’s survived by becoming a speakeasy. You can still check out the speakeasy room today, as well as other items from the era. It’s truly a fascinating peek at Minnesota history.

In the 1930s, an even more unusual attraction was added to Neumann’s: frogs. A small pond was added to the front window, drawing visitors in search of the curious sight.

Beyond Hamm’s, Neumann’s Bar serves up many other beers on tap. You can also get just about any cocktail you can imagine.

There is also a full food menu today. The menu is full of American fare, including hot dogs, burgers, and other great treats.

You may visit for the history, but it’s definitely worth staying awhile for a meal - and a beer!
