When you think of hiking in Virginia, Shenandoah National Park is probably among the first destinations that come to mind. And you’re not alone. This iconic national park receives nearly 1.4 million visitors annually, and many of them gravitate towards the same trails. However, if you’re someone who values a bit more peace and quiet during your trek, there are plenty of lesser-known destinations within the park. One of the most overlooked trails is Pass Mountain Overlook Trail.
Tucked away in Shenandoah National Park near the town of Luray, Pass Mountain Trail is an underrated hiking adventure that’s sure to impress you.
Erin Gifford / AllTrails Pass Mountain Trail can either be an out-and-back adventure or a loop, depending on your preference. The out-and-back trail will require you to turn around after the overlook and retrace your steps to complete the 2.4-mile trip. The loop route clocks in at 3.4 miles.
To start, you’ll want to park at Milepost 31.6 and follow a short connector to the Appalachian Trail.

Eventually, you’ll (carefully) cross Route 211, as well as Skyline Drive, before passing a trail shelter and reaching the overlook, which, according to hikers, is slightly off the trail by about 30 yards.

Because this trail is located within Shenandoah National Park, an entrance fee will be required. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash, and hikers should note that this trail does not meet ADA requirements.
