Pay A Visit To Hub City Railroad Museum In South Carolina

You don’t have to be a railfan to get pleasure from visiting a railroad museum. South Carolina is home to a number of historic depots that have been transformed into railroad museums – including the Hub City Railroad Museum in Spartanburg. A visit here includes a bit a history merged with some thrilling trainspotting on tracks that are only a few steps from the building.

Welcome to the Hub City Railroad Museum at 298 Magnolia Street in Spartanburg.

It’s located in the historic Southern Railway Spartanburg Union Depot, now functioning solely as the museum.

Google Maps/Judy Jfiero It’s worthy to note here that, in 2020, the museum closed temporarily due to COVID-19. It has yet to reopen. Visitors can check the museum’s website or follow its Facebook page to stay up to date on the reopening date — hopefully in 2021.

Out in front of the museum is a historic Southern Railway caboose that was built in Spartanburg in 1947. It’s currently undergoing some renovations with window replacements and more.

And inside the museum is a wealth of displays featuring items and information from years gone by at the depot, which opened in 1904.

Also inside, a model train setup visitors can peruse to see if they recognize the model city in the landscape. But if you want a thrilling experience while on this field trip, you’ll step out back…

Two tracks, one running north and one running south, are just outside the back of the depot and the tracks are very busy!
