As the story goes, the original founder, a Frenchman by the name of Philippe Mathieu created the French Dipped sandwich quite by accident in 1918 when he inadvertently dropped a bread roll into the pan of juices from the freshly roasted beef. The customer who was served this accidental sandwich enjoyed it so much that it quickly became a popular menu item that was later named the “French Dipped Sandwich.”
