It wasn’t terribly long ago that Native Americans roamed what is now called Indiana. There are several interesting destinations around the state where you can catch a glimpse of a time and people that once was, but some tend to get more foot traffic than others. The Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest Trail is a lesser-trekked, short, and sweet hike that leads to some intriguing Indian ruins in Indiana from a time long past, and it’s family-friendly, too.

The forest you trek through is 88 beautiful acres of “virgin” (meaning literally untouched by man) forest.

Don Barrett/Flickr The trees surrounding you are a mixture of ancient walnut, poplar, oak, and ash trees. Some are as large as 50+ inches around, and some are so tall that their lowest branch doesn’t begin for up to 60 feet.

The trail is pleasant and quiet; it’s one of the more under-appreciated trails in Indiana, and we’re not really sure why.

Daniel J. Layton/Wikimedia It’s beautiful, and the insanely ancient trees seem to whisper stories that you hear only in the wind.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this trail, however, is what it leads to.

The woods contain Native American bottomland village remains, many of which date back to around 1380 B.C.E.

The northern boundary of the area is hugged by Lick Creek, and the trail isn’t very long (only about one and a half miles), so it’s easy to locate.

Ed Strubel/AllTrails It’s open and accessible year-round, though in the spring and summer, we’re treated to some vibrant and beautiful wildflowers all over the region.

Once you’ve taken some time to appreciate the Native American ruins, make sure to lounge beside the creek for a bit.

Kris tin/AllTrails The water is crystal-clear, chilly, and very refreshing.

The entire area was set aside specifically for conservation back in 1944, and we are so very glad it was.

Jennifer Gray/AllTrails It’s not very often you come across a trail that’s short and easy which leads to unbelievable ruins from a time and people long past.

This is probably one of the best of the best when it comes to finding Native American ruins in Indiana. It seems to check all the boxes: beautiful, interesting, and ancient. Even if archaeology isn’t quite your thing, there’s no way you won’t be ultra-fascinated by this peek into the past.
