Back in 1771, Acadian pioneer Firmin Breaux purchased land from a wealthy man in New Orleans and founded what would eventually become known as Breaux Bridge.

In 1799, Breaux built the Bayou Teche—a footbridge to help people cross over into town.

It was this footbridge that ended up creating the nickname for the town, and eventually became a more stable bridge than the original one made of planks and rope.

It wasn’t until 1859 that the town was officially incorporated, but it’s been a charmingly historic place to visit ever since.
