Rhode Island is a small state, for sure, but it’s still full of adventure, fun attractions, and of course, history. Many people travel to Rhode Island to see the Newport Mansions, which is located in a bustling area full of beautiful architecture, scenic ocean views, and rich history. But, if you travel just about 45 minutes, you can arrive at a destination not known to many that offers up the same historical feel. The Pawtucket-Central Falls Railway Station is an old abandoned station that is a total hidden gem in our books. Read on to discover why this should be your next day trip.
The Pawtucket-Central Railway Station in Rhode Island was opened in 1916. The station’s purpose was to replace stations located in both Pawtucket and Centrals Falls, essentially combining two stations into one.

The original design included two platforms and four tracks. Over the years construction has been done by to the tracks to try to reopen service since the MBTA Commuter Rail stopped funding this station in 1981.

In 1984, the station was nominated to become a part of The National Register of Historic Places. However, it was declined a spot because there were concerns about its structural integrity.

In 1988, the MBTA Commuter Rail decided to begin funding the commute to Providence again. But, Pawtucket-Central Falls Railway Station remained closed because of the poor condition it was in.

The station is in such bad condition that rebuilding from old construction would only rack up the cost of the project. A new station is in the works now at a different location to accommodate commuters around the general area.

Although you can’t jump on a train at this station, you can certainly jump into history and enjoy this beautiful hidden gem.
