Beachcombing is a real-life treasure hunt, but instead of buried gold and diamonds, the prize is sea stars and seashells. There are many places along Oregon’s 363-mile coastline where the ocean’s treasures speckle the shores, but there’s one beach in particular along the central coast where you’ll find the biggest bounty of all. Located just south of Newport, Seal Rock State Recreation Site is home to an abundance of wildlife, stunning sea stacks, and a cornucopia of colorful sea stars.

These massive rock formations along the shores are known as sea stacks. They’re craggy, vertical columns of rock caused by years of ocean erosion.

In addition to these fantastic formations, Seal Rock is also known for its tide pools.

As the tides rush in and flow out, the area’s rocky and uneven terrain causes water to be trapped, or pooled.
