Here in Northern California, we consider ourselves vastly lucky to enjoy such close proximity to the coast. After all, coastal adventures are just the best. This remote beach trail is especially worth checking out when you’ve got some coastal wanderlust. Leading you straight to an inactive lighthouse on a gorgeous section of the coast, this beach hike is bound to ignite your sense of adventure.

Hiding out on the Humboldt County Coast near the town of Petrolia, the Punta Gorda Lighthouse is a gem that’s worth seeking out. It’s just a four-mile walk away from the trailhead and it’s worth every step.

The beach trail to the lighthouse is part of the Lost Coast Trail, a much longer backpacking route in King Range National Conservation Area. The hike itself is moderate with enough ups and downs to get your blood moving, but still manageable enough to enjoy the pleasant scenery.

You’ll start the trail from the Mattole River Beach parking area. Since much of the trail traverses the beach, parts of it may be underwater during high tide. You’ll want to be sure to take a look at the tide tables before heading out and time your hike accordingly.

Upon reaching the lighthouse, hikers can explore the structure and the nearby oil house building. The small and simple lighthouse is completely open, so you can enter and check it out for yourself!

Built in 1911, the Punta Gorda Lighthouse was in service until 1951 when it was decided that it was too costly to maintain. Its super remote location made it notoriously difficult to reach. It was even given the nickname “the Alcatraz of Lighthouses” due to its isolated setting.

After checking out the lighthouse, you can head down to the sandy beach and enjoy the tranquil ocean views. Keep an eye out for the locals! You’ll typically find them laying on the beach.
