The sanctuary was founded in 2015 and is named after a cow that lived next door to the founder’s property. Her ear tag was numbered 38, but she had a unique personality and the founder felt she deserved to be remembered by name.

At this time, Shy 38 is Kansas’s only farm sanctuary. The farm houses more than 140 rescued animals.

The farm takes in surrenders from local residents, transfers from cruelty cases, and animals with health issues that would otherwise be sold at auction for meat. Some of the animals’ stories are more unusual: a few of the resident goats were found after being displaced by a tornado!
