There’s a new place to drink beer in Providence, and we couldn’t be happier. But while the brewery’s location is new, the beer’s history goes all the way back to 1890. And what a wild history Narragansett Beer has.

Narragansett Beer has been around since long before Prohibition – and the company had to do a few creative things, like sell artificial ice, to keep the doors open during that time.

Narragansett Beer / Facebook In the early 1980s, the brewery was shut down and production moved to Indiana. Fortunately, lifelong Rhode Islander Mark Hellendrung rallied a group of investors to bring it home to Rhody.

Narragansett Brewery just opened a new Providence brewery and taproom, which sits across from India Point Park.

This location is so new, the kitchen isn’t open yet – but you’re always welcome to order from your favorite local restaurant.
