Taking a day trip to a fun attraction in Maine is one of the best parts of living here or visiting for an extended period of time. Everyday life is great in New England, but getting in the car and making our way to a place where we can learn and have fun is something extra-special. If you can get to southern Maine easily, we recommend a visit to York Animal Kingdom’s butterfly exhibit. As far as we know it’s the only one of its type in the state!
York’s Wild Kingdom in York is a family-friendly place to spend the day meeting new animal friends and getting closer to wildlife.

It’s not huge and it’s certainly not super-modern and that’s exactly what we love about it. This zoo and amusement park is the only one of its kind in all of New England, making it as special as it is fun.

York Animal Kingdom typically opens close to the end of May and stays open through the fall. Hours vary during the season, but they’re primarily open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. In June and September, only the zoo is open on weekdays and the amusement opens for the weekends. In July and August, both the zoo and the amusement park are open every day.
