For the past 20 years, Safe Haven Llama and Alpaca Sanctuary (SHLAS), a non-profit, has saved llamas and alpacas through adoption, rescue, and public outreach. The farm animal sanctuary, located in Corvallis, Montana is home to neglected, abandoned, handicapped, mistreated, and abused llamas and alpacas. If you’re a lover of these sweet creatures, you should visit the sanctuary to see how happy they are in their new home.

SHLAS does not turn any llama or alpaca away, as a result, a significant number of the residents are older animals that require extensive daily vet care.

As an animal cruelty and prevention center, the sanctuary does not simply rescue llamas and alpacas, but provides rehabilitation, as well, through humane care, wellness, and compassionate treatments.

You can visit the sanctuary, but you would have to call or email ahead to schedule the date and time.

If you are interested in adopting a llama or alpaca, do well to speak to administrators. The sanctuary seeks suitable and permanent homes for these animals.

SHLAS is 100% volunteer-run and completely depends on donations to continue operation. All cash donations are used to care for the residents, to cover the cost of medical care, hay, treats, llama coats and blankets for the winter, and more.

Currently, the sanctuary is home to a herd of roughly 30 llamas and alpacas. There are more of the former than the latter. Most of the herd are over the age of 16 and deemed unadoptable due to age or medical problems, as such, they will spend their remaining days at the sanctuary.

SHLAS is considered retirement for llamas and alpacas so please try to be kind to the animals when you visit. If you can, make sure to donate to the sanctuary to help them continue the good work.
