We all know that Nebraskans share an indomitable spirit that persists through all kinds of hardships; we’re just hardwired to be resilient. One of the most heartwarming of these stories comes from the little community of St. James.
The tiny unincorporated community of St. James in the northeastern corner of Nebraska saw its peak population of around 100 in 1882. Since then, it’s been a quiet little place that most people have never even heard of.

When the Omaha Archdiocese closed the St. Philip and James Catholic Church, the residents of St. James and surrounding communities were determined to keep their home alive. This meant giving folks a place together that would replace the church, as well as a unique attraction that would bring visitors in.

St. James Marketplace was born in 2001, the result of tireless efforts by five local women who refused to see their community disappear like so many others. The market is located in the 1918 building that once housed St. Philip and James Parochial School.

The little shop operates like a farmers market, giving artisans a place to sell their handmade wares. Some of the most popular items are the delicious baked goods. Stop in for a fresh pie or a hearty loaf of bread to complement tonight’s dinner.

Some of the other handmade items you’ll find here are clothing jewelry, rugs, blankets, and home decor. Approximately 60 artisans bring their products out every year to offer during the selling season, which runs from May to December.
