Here in New Hampshire, we’ve heard (and told!) plenty of ghost stories. We have plenty of memories from childhood sleepovers talking about local homes, restaurants, and hotels that are reportedly filled with ghosts. We also have memories of camping trips, telling the spookiest story we could think of while cozied up in sleeping bags around a fire. The only thing that allowed us to fall asleep was knowing that they weren’t real. But this one we’re not quite sure about. There’s one ghost story involving a local waterway that gives us the chills just thinking about it!

Bow Lake, located in both Strafford and Rockingham counties, is a local go-to spot for activities like fishing, boating and swimming.

It’s beautiful year-round, but it’s especially popular in the summer when those with camps along the shores come to spend time with friends and families. The call of the loon and the summer breezes are exactly what makes a New Hampshire summer so special.

But when the sun goes down, locals and people who have visited report things being a bit less fun.

There are no reports of crimes or deaths here that could bring about rumors of a haunting.

Nonetheless there have been sounds, disembodied voices and even unexplained bright lights reported here for years.

Some people tell stories of being out on the water at dusk, headed home for dinner, when they hear a call for help from someone on the lake. They go back, find nothing and head towards shore again. No sooner do they turn around when they hear the calls again, this time more frantic.

Despite many tries, none of these people ever find anyone in need of help. Other locals have reported strange bright lights coming from the distance, beyond the trees. And others have even told tales of a night when the sky looked like daytime from midnight to 3:15 a.m.

Are these tales true? Those who tell them certainly believe they are. And even if we’re not sure about their validity, there’s a good chance you won’t find us anywhere near Bow Lake after the sun goes down!

Have you ever visited Bow Lake and experienced something strange? If so, tell us about it in the comments. Quite a few people report hearing voices, but others are confident that nothing strange is going on here at all. We welcome your thoughts!
