In western Nebraska, snuggled on the western edge of the sandhills east of the panhandle, sits “The Biggest Little Village in Nebraska.” The nickname was well earned; although this village long ago gained enough residents to be deemed a city, residents voted to leave it designated a village. That commitment to tradition is evident everywhere in this lovely little town.
Sutherland, located between North Platte and Ogallala, has a population of 1,286. It sits just north of the South Platte River and Sutherland Reservoir. It’s close enough to North Platte that a lot of residents commute to the city for work.

The sweet little village can trace its roots all the way back to the days of the Oregon-California and Mormon Trails. In fact, you can still see wagon wheel ruts from the 19th-century migrants nearby.

The town may be small, but there’s no shortage of fun things to do and see. Residents enjoy amenities like a public pool and the Sutherland Railroad Park. Hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities occupy the time of many Sutherland residents and visitors.

The Sutherland State Aid Bridge is a must-see for every lover of Nebraska history and architecture. The bridge was built as part of the State Aid Program between 1912 and 1936. While 17 of these concrete arch bridges were built under the program, this is the only one that hasn’t been destroyed or significantly altered. It’s impressive to behold in person.
Visit North Platte
A lot of people end up in Sutherland while visiting Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area. This gorgeous outdoor recreation area offers great boating, fishing, hunting, camping, and swimming. It’s much less crowded than nearby Lake McConaughy and makes the perfect primitive camping site if you want to get away from everything for a little while.

If you love pioneer history, be sure to stop by O’Fallon’s Bluff, a nearby site along the South Platte River that’s on the National Register of Historic Sites. You can see Oregon-California Trail wagon wheel ruts there, and the hills are a really lovely part of Nebraska.
