Hikers come from near and far to hit the trails throughout Red River Gorge. We talk about this area a lot because it truly is one the best places to hike in the entire region. It has something for everyone, of every skill level, and many are surprised that such a natural gem is tucked into the Bluegrass State. But those who have been to the Gorge know about its beauty and many have also experienced some – or maybe even all – of the Auxier Ridge Trail. This popular loop trail in Red River Gorge is an all around great hike in Kentucky, but keep in mind that it is long and can be challenging. But there are many rewards along the way, including an ice cream-shaped rock that is one of many photo ops on the trail.

The Auxier Ridge Trail in Daniel Boone National Forest is one of the most well known hikes in the area. If you do the entire loop, it’s about 7 miles long and is definitely a workout, but many traverse this popular loop trail in Red River Gorge each year.

There is parking at the trailhead (see the map on the Alltrails site, linked below), but it can get crowded at peak weekend hours. Many avid hikers and primitive campers take this trail to camp in some of the most scenic sites in the Gorge.

If you want a slightly easier trek, take the trail counter clockwise. You will then be able to go down many of the steps and you’ll end the hike with a flat gravel road as a nice cool down.

There are natural stairs along the trail as well, and they lead to some pretty incredible views.

There are many unique rock formations along the trail, but this ice cream cone-shaped rock takes the cake (pun intended). It looks like Mother Nature worked at Dairy Queen at one point and knows how to create the perfect soft serve work of art - in rock form.

You’ll also hike to Double Arch and view Courthouse Rock along this trail. Be sure to pack lots of water, wear bug spray, take out what you bring in, and enjoy this lengthy but unforgettable hike in Kentucky.
