While Amtrak trains can be found throughout America, the Downeaster offers access to some of the most quintessential New England towns, making it one of the best routes you’ll find on their network.

The entirety of the route runs 145 miles from Brunswick all the way to Boston.

The Maine route from Brunswick to Wells takes about an hour and a half, stopping at some of the most fun towns on the coast. And a one-way ticket starts at just $8!

Start your trip in Brunswick where the train stops right downtown. Grab a snack and a drink and get ready for the ride to Freeport, which takes less than 15 minutes.

The route throughout Maine is so beautiful, you’ll wish there was more time between stops. The train in Freeport stops within walking distance of the world-famous outlets. Do some shopping and hop back on to make your way to Portland.

In addition to the views and access to Maine’s towns, there’s also a cafe with beverages, snacks, and light meals.

One of Maine’s most fantastic cities, Portland offers visitors so much to do, you’ll want to spend all day here. The train station is a few miles from the Old Port so you’ll want to get a cab or hop on the bus from here.

From Portland you’ll make your way to Old Orchard Beach. This stop is seasonal and runs from mid-spring to mid-fall. The rest of the year, you’ll still see some beautiful sights, though.

From Old Orchard Beach, you’ll continue south to Saco where you can walk to Biddeford’s shops, art galleries and restaurants. You can even take a shuttle to the University of New England’s gorgeous campus.
