Washington has some of the most scenic drives in the entire country. And after all these “unprecedented times,” we certainly appreciate them a lot more. When the weather warms up, there’s one route, in particular, we love to recommend: The Mount Baker Scenic Byway. Although it’s only a 57-mile drive, you’ll want to allow plenty of time to stop and explore.

The Mount Baker Scenic Byway runs northeast from Bellingham to Artist Point, and it’s the only road to reach the Mount Baker Ski Area.

During the summer months, the highway is fully open and takes you to plenty of hiking trails and outdoor adventures.

The route winds past the banks of the Nooksack River, old-growth forests, waterfalls, and small logging communities.

Along the way, you can stop at viewpoints, picnic areas, and the picturesque Silver Lake Park.

Eventually, you’ll reach Heather Meadows, an incredibly scenic area all on its own…

… and your journey ends at the base of Mount Baker, a 10,781-foot volcano.
